The tenets of professional communication are getting redefined by the introduction of GIFs on LinkedIn, the number one professional networking site on the internet.
It’s not that this is the first time GIFs are being explored in the field of workplace conversation. You had platforms like Slack which offered the option of sending GIFs. Additionally, people were sending GIFs through emails anyway. But with LinkedIn offering this feature in its messaging option, people are talking about the role of GIFs in an otherwise serious professional setup.
The warning bells are sounded by LinkedIn itself! In a disclaimer, it has noted that people should use GIFs in LinkedIn messages only after evaluation the seriousness of the matter, in addition to the professional culture at the workplace. The disclaimer also asks you to consider your professional equation with the receiver of the message before actually sending GIFs over.
To make this introduction of GIFs possible, LinkedIn is partnering with Tenor, a company that was recently acquired by Google. That Tenor has its hands free to make deals as an independent brand is clear from their pact with a rival company like LinkedIn. Google acquired Tenor to boost the GIF search sector. With LinkedIn, the partnership of Tenor will help users to search for GIFs within the messaging platform and send them over to the intended receiver.
As of now, the introduction is rolling out in phases. In the next few weeks, you should be able to send GIFs through your LinkedIn messages.
Whether you choose to send them or not is obviously a question that you need to evaluate. Would you?
