Are you a fan of the ‘Stories’ function available on social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat? Google is taking up the competition in this segment with its own version of this feature that allows users to stitch together images and videos, along with texts, into a single content piece.
The version being tested by Google is labelled AMP Stories. As the name suggests, these stories will be in the AMP format, or to elongate it, the Accelerated Mobile Pages format. There is a major difference between Google’s version and what you get on Instagram or Snapchat.
On the social media apps mentioned here, ‘Stories’ uploaded by users are published on the app itself. Google’s AMP stories will allow users to publish their content on their own platforms. Google will simply allow the publishers a platform. When you click on the stories link, the content of the stories will be pulled from the publisher’s web page. In other words, AMP stories are essentially like any other search result available on Google: it pulls content from individual sites, without having a platform to upload content there.
These AMP stories are HTML pages hosted on the publisher’s website. It gives a lot of freedom to the publisher. You can work on the stories with the help of unique templates, user interface controls and the like. As of today, it is open for publishers across the globe. You can try out the new feature by checking out the tutorial published by Google.
Currently, only some of the publishers of AMP stories will find place on Google’s search results. Later on, others can join the arena. Google also plans to introduce new types of content in this format. Exciting times ahead!
